About Professor Byron L. Warnken, Esq.
Professor Byron L. Warnken was born in Baltimore 66 years ago. He is the first male in his family to earn a high school diploma. Professor Warnken was a scholarship student at McDonogh School (class of 1964) and Johns Hopkins University (class of 1968). After college, he was drafted and spent four years in the U.S. Army as an enlisted man. In 1969, Professor Warnken married Bonnie Lee Angevine. After being discharged from the Army, he attended the University of Baltimore School of Law (UofB) as an evening student (cum laude, class of 1977). While in law school, Professor Warnken worked full-time as a law clerk, first with a law firm and then with the Honorable Basil A. Thomas on the Circuit Court for Baltimore City. After law school, he entered the Honors Program of the Chief Counsel’s Office, Internal Revenue Service, in Washington, D.C.
In 1977, while practicing tax law in Washington, Professor Warnken taught as an adjunct law professor at UofB. In 1978, he joined the faculty full-time and was tenured in 1982. Professor Warnken teaches primarily in the area of criminal law and constitutional criminal procedure. For 33 years, he served as Director of the Judicial Internship Program and Judicial “EXPLOR” Program, placing more than 3,000 law students with judges, including a record-setting 161 students in summer 2010. In moot court, Professor Warnken is (1) Faculty Adviser to UofB’s Moot Court Board, which manages 19 interschool appellate advocacy teams that argue throughout the nation against other law schools (ranked 38 among 200 law school in 2008-09); and (2) Director of a 16-school, four-state region of the National Moot Court Competition.
In 1992, Professor Byron L. Warnken founded Warnken, LLC. It started out as a very small shop, handling only appeals and plaintiff’s medical malpractice. In the first year, the Firm opened up 29 files. It now has four attorneys handling a number of different practice areas. It currently opens about 500 files per year.
